7.5 Breastfeeding – Common Questions

Are you breastfeeding and have questions? You’re not alone. Many new mothers have questions about breastfeeding. Below are some common questions about breastfeeding, as well as tips and advice.

Q: I’m having trouble getting my baby to latch on. What can I do?

A: Try different positions until you find one that is comfortable for both you and your baby. You may also want to try using a breast shield.

Q: How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?

A: Look for signs that your baby is content and gaining weight. Also, watch for wet and dirty diapers. If you’re concerned, talk to your healthcare provider.

Q: I’m leaking breast milk. What can I do?

A: Try wearing a breast pad. You can also express some milk into a cup or bottle and apply it to your nipple before breastfeeding.

Q: My nipples are sore. What can I do?

A: Apply a lanolin cream to your nipples after each feeding. You may also want to try different breastfeeding positions.

Q: I’m going back to work. How can I continue breastfeeding?

A: You can pump breast milk and store it in a bottle or freezer bag. When you’re away from your baby, give them the expressed milk. You can also try wearing a breast pump hands-free bra so you can pump while working.

Q: I’m having trouble breastfeeding in public. What can I do?

A: Wear a nursing cover or scarf. You can also try to find a private place to breastfeed, such as a lactation room.

Q: I think I have mastitis. What should I do?

A: See your healthcare provider right away. You may need antibiotics to clear the infection. In the meantime, continue nursing and expressing milk from the affected breast. Apply a warm compress to the breast and take ibuprofen for pain relief.

Q: I want to wean my baby. How do I do it?

A: Gradually reduce the number of times you breastfeed each day. You can also try giving your baby a bottle of expressed milk or formula during some feedings. Some mothers find it helpful to wean at night first. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns.

If you have any other questions about breastfeeding, talk to your healthcare provider or a lactation consultant. Breastfeeding is a natural process, but it doesn’t always come easy. With a little help and support, you can successfully breastfeed your baby.
