Socioeconomic Status

Socioeconomic status is an individual’s position within the hierarchical social structure of the society they belong to.

There are many levels of socioeconomic status, determined by several variables that are sometimes out of the control of the individual. The variables that make up socioeconomic status include race and ethnicity, education, housing status and neighborhood of residence, income and employment, as well as gender and sex. In the following lessons, we will break these down, and learn about the variables in more detail.
