Nature and Nurture

It is a natural instinct to care and nurture our young. It is needed for the survival of a species. As family leaders we need to keep this emotion and skill set alive as these adorable babies become toddlers and teenagers. Those teens need to develop those skills as their peers, parents, and elders need them. Its the circle of life.

The same is true of running our organizations. I am saddened to say that many of us lose this instinct and see it as an impediment to running a successful organization or program. The organization needs to sustain, but it almost must be attentive to the needs and concerns of those that are devoting their work life, at great opportunity cost, to show up and work for you. There is no profit without the people the deliver the product or service. On this Valentine’s Day, may I be so bold as to suggest that you take a moment as think of your self as the leader you hoped you would become, and pause to consider what more you can do to make sure their is a culture or love and support for those that care about your program, organization, and is mission. Passionate people, become productive profit creators. Healthy people show up for work and deliver. Its good business to be a caring leader. Please be a force for health and invest in those people with kindness and compensation.
