World No Tobacco Day

World No Tobacco Day: Commit to Quit
Observed: May 31, 2025
World No Tobacco Day, observed annually on May 31, is a global initiative organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to highlight the dangers of tobacco use and advocate for tobacco-free environments.

This year’s theme, “Commit to Quit,” encourages smokers to start their journey toward a healthier, tobacco-free life.

In addition to its link to cancer, heart disease, and respiratory issues, tobacco use negatively impacts the environment through deforestation, water pollution, and hazardous waste from discarded cigarette butts.

Three Facts:
1. Tobacco kills over 8 million people annually, and nearly 1.2 million of these deaths are caused by secondhand smoke exposure.
2. Cigarette butts, the most littered item globally, release harmful chemicals into ecosystems.
3. Quitting smoking can reverse lung damage and significantly reduce the risk of heart attack within just a few years.

How to Support World No Tobacco Day:
1. Share resources or host workshops to help smokers quit and educate about nicotine replacement therapies.
2. Promote smoke-free policies at workplaces and public spaces to reduce secondhand smoke exposure.
3. Use social media and hashtags like #WorldNoTobaccoDay and #CommitToQuit to spread awareness.

Three Resources:
1. World Health Organization (WHO) – Global campaigns highlighting the health and environmental dangers of tobacco use.
2. CDC: Quit Smoking – Resources for quitting smoking and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke.
3. Truth Initiative – Supports anti-tobacco campaigns and programs targeting teens and young adults.

The event is finished.
