World Lupus Day

World Lupus Day: Shining a Light on Lupus Warriors
Observed: May 10, 2025
Each year, World Lupus Day on May 10th brings global attention to lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions worldwide. This observance highlights the physical, emotional, and financial toll lupus takes on individuals and their families while advocating for greater understanding, timely diagnosis, and expanded treatment options.

Lupus causes the immune system to attack healthy tissues, resulting in inflammation, pain, and potential damage to organs like the heart, kidneys, and central nervous system. Despite its widespread impact, lupus is often misunderstood, and increased awareness is key to ensuring those affected receive the care and support they deserve.

Three Facts:
1. Lupus is known as “the great imitator” because its symptoms, such as joint pain, rash, and fatigue, often mimic those of other conditions, leading to delayed diagnosis.
2. Women, especially those of childbearing age, account for 90% of lupus diagnoses, with Black, Asian, and Hispanic women disproportionately affected.
3. While there is no cure, early diagnosis and treatments—like antimalarial drugs, corticosteroids, and biologics—can significantly reduce symptoms and prevent disease progression.

How to Participate on World Lupus Day:
1. Wear Purple: Show solidarity with the lupus community by wearing purple and using hashtags like #WorldLupusDay on social media.
2. Donate or Fundraise: Support organizations advocating for lupus research and providing resources to lupus warriors.
3. Educate Yourself and Others: Share facts about lupus, including symptoms and treatment options, to foster understanding in your community.
