We can Agree to Try to Understand Each Other

The debate set the stage for making decisions for our country. We can be divisive or unifying and healing with how we deal with the outcomes and discussions that follow.

Five Ways to Discuss Difficult Issues with Someone You Strongly Disagree With

  1.  Listen Actively and Respectfully
    1. Allow the other person to express their views without interruption.
    2. Show genuine interest in their perspective by nodding and maintaining eye contact.
    3. Paraphrase what they’ve said to ensure understanding and demonstrate that you’re listening
  2. Find Common Ground
    1. Identify shared values or goals early in the conversation.
    2. Acknowledge any points of agreement, no matter how small, to build a foundation for further discussion.
    3. Use these commonalities as a starting point to bridge differences.
  3. Ask Open-Ended Questions
    1. Encourage deeper conversation by asking questions that require more than a yes or no answer.
    2. Focus on understanding the reasons behind their beliefs and opinions.
    3. Avoid leading questions that may seem confrontational or accusatory.
  4. Stay Calm and Manage Emotions
    1. Keep your tone and body language neutral and composed.
    2. Take breaks if the conversation becomes too heated, and agree to return to the discussion later.
    3. Practice empathy by trying to see the situation from their point of view.
  5. Propose Collaborative Solutions
    1. Suggest ways to work together towards a mutually beneficial outcome.
    2. Be open to compromise and flexible in finding solutions.
    3. Agree on at least one specific action you can take together to address the issue.
