Tatiana Holanda breast cancer survivor 6Al principio, desesperación, luego angustia y ansiedad.

A Brazilian Cancer Survivor in San Antonio

“I don’t see cancer as an opponent. I see it as a teacher.”

This is the phrase that sums up my story.

Tatiana Holanda breast cancer survivor 1At age 33, after examinations, a lump in the left breast of 2 cm was detected, in the ultrasound examination it was classified as Birads 4 with biopsy indication. In June 2019, with the result in hand, it was confirmed that it was triple-negative breast cancer.

At first, despair, then anguish and anxiety. There was a 40-day wait between diagnosis and initiation of treatment. I had to draw strength from somewhere, at that time my son Rafael was 1 year old. When I discovered the disease, I thought: I asked God so much for a son and what am I going to do now in the face of cancer? Will I bow my head?

I felt like I was in a war where no one asked me if I wanted to go or not, I was just there. At that point you decide whether to fight or bow. So I decided to fight and started my positive forces marathons, sought psychological, medical, nutritional and spiritual help. I tried to be as healthy as possible, taking care of my diet, walking, praying, I started meditating and talking to people who have been through this.

Tatiana Holanda breast cancer survivor family 2My treatment was 16 cycles of chemotherapies, two bilateral radical mastectomies with immediate reconstruction and 15 sessions of radiotherapy, in the course of the treatment I discovered that I have a BRCA1 genetic mutation, it is a gene that affects the probability of a person developing breast and ovarian cancer. For this reason I chose to have a mastectomy on both breasts as a form of prevention.

Cancer did not affect my self-esteem, I knew how to take advantage of the stage I was going through, although the treatment is something very aggressive for our body, where women lose their hair, feel fragile and in a way shake their a little self-esteem, something that I am sure to inform here.

That we have to understand that everyone faces their problems in a different way. I managed to face this phase with lightness, I learned to love my bald spot, I participated in several events, especially in Pink October, the month dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer, I did fashion shows, photo sessions and today it is something that I keep with great affection in my heart.

Tatiana Holanda breast cancer survivor family 1Today, back at work, I live my life normally, and right after finishing the treatment I had another son, my miracle Davi Lucca. I am grateful to God for all that you have done in my life. A lesson I learned: everything in life is a phase, and that bad days pass.

What would Tatiana post-cancer say to Tatiana pre-cancer? I would say, don’t give up, because from the moment you decide to fight for life, you have already won!

Today I have to enjoy every second, because life is very worthwhile. It is like a second opportunity, life is very valuable and before everything I have gone through, today I value more the simple things in life. The miracle happens every day, he just thinks it’s possible.

A message to all women who are in cancer treatment: Be strong and brave!
