Autism Awareness: Understanding the Spectrum, Embracing the Individual

👋 Hi, I’m Dr. Rob Gillio, Chief Medical Officer for the Force for Health Network.

Today, let’s talk about Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD — a condition that affects how people communicate, learn, and interact with the world around them.

🔎 What Is Autism?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that varies widely from person to person. Some individuals may need significant support in daily life, while others live independently and excel in unique ways.

The word “spectrum” reminds us that no two people with autism are exactly alike.

👶🏽 Who Does It Affect?
Autism affects about 1 in 36 children in the U.S., and many adults as well.
It’s often diagnosed by age 2 or 3, but signs can appear earlier.
Boys are diagnosed more frequently than girls, but autism occurs across all races, cultures, and economic groups.
🚩 What Are the Signs?
Delayed speech or limited social interaction
Repetitive behaviors or intense focus on specific interests
Sensory sensitivities — like being overwhelmed by noise, lights, or textures
Difficulty with changes in routine
Early identification and support can help individuals thrive.
🫂 Why Awareness Matters
Understanding autism reduces stigma and builds compassion and inclusion.
Supporting individuals with autism in school, work, and community life is everyone’s responsibility.
Celebrating neurodiversity enriches all of us — and opens doors for talents we may otherwise overlook.
💡 Let’s take action together.

Get educated. Ask questions with kindness. Create environments where everyone feels safe and supported.

Because when we understand and accept each other, we grow stronger together.

Learn it. Live it. Share it.

I’m Dr. Rob Gillio — thanks for being a Force for Health and a voice for understanding.
