National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month: Breathe Easier

May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, a time to educate the public about these common conditions and provide strategies to manage and prevent asthma attacks and allergic reactions. This observance highlights the importance of reducing environmental triggers and access to effective treatments.

Three Facts:

1. Asthma affects over 25 million people in the U.S., including 6 million children.
2. Common asthma triggers include pollen, dust mites, mold, pet dander, and air pollution.
3. Allergies affect more than 50 million Americans annually, making them one of the most common chronic illnesses.

How to Participate in Awareness Efforts:

1. Share educational materials about identifying asthma symptoms and preventing attacks.
2. Promote the importance of allergen-free environments in homes, schools, and workplaces.
3. Advocate for increased access to allergy testing, inhalers, and other medical interventions.

Three Resources:

1. Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America (AAFA) – Advocacy and educational tools for asthma and allergies.
2. CDC: Asthma – Resources on managing asthma symptoms and reducing triggers.
3. Asthma.com – Patient tools for managing asthma and improving breathing quality.
