360° Human Explorer Tour: Bladder Health

Bladder Health
Hi, this is Dr. Rob with the 360 Human Explorer Tour, and today I’d like to discuss bladder health. Let’s start with the basics. When you examine urine under a microscope during a urinalysis, it should generally be free of bacteria or white blood cells. Any abnormalities could indicate an infection or other issue.
Using the 360 Human Explorer, I navigate to the urinary system. The urinary system includes:
– Kidneys: Filter blood and remove excess water and waste to produce urine.
– Ureters: Tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
– Bladder: A muscular tank that stores urine until it’s released.
– Urethra: The tube that allows urine to exit the body.
Healthy kidneys filter urine, which travels down the ureters and collects in the bladder. The bladder’s sphincter muscles hold the urine until you’re ready to release it. In women, the urethra is shorter, which can make them more prone to infections. In men, the urethra passes through the prostate, which can enlarge and obstruct urine flow as men age.

Common issues affecting the bladder include urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, and incontinence. Drinking plenty of fluids helps flush out toxins and prevent kidney stones. It’s important to empty your bladder when you feel the urge; holding urine for extended periods can lead to spasms or infections.

Women should wipe front to back to avoid transferring bacteria from the anus to the urethra, reducing the risk of UTIs. Symptoms of bladder infections include burning during urination, urgency, fever, or lower abdominal pain. If you experience these, consult a healthcare provider.
For men, an enlarged prostate can obstruct the flow of urine and cause additional symptoms. The prostate, a donut-shaped gland, surrounds the urethra and produces fluid to support sperm vitality. An enlarged prostate can narrow the urethra and cause difficulty urinating.

In summary, a healthy bladder requires adequate hydration and proper hygiene. If you notice symptoms such as pain, burning, or changes in urinary patterns, seek medical advice. Explore the urinary system further with the 360 Human Explorer to improve your health literacy and live healthier. Learn it, live it, and share it to be a force for health.
