National Glaucoma Awareness Month

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI) to emphasize early detection and prevention of glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.

3 Facts to Know:

  1. Glaucoma often has no symptoms in its early stages, making regular checkups critical.
  2. Over 3 million Americans currently live with glaucoma, but half are undiagnosed.
  3. There’s no cure for glaucoma, but early treatment can prevent significant vision loss.

3 Things to Do:

  1. Get a comprehensive eye exam if you’re over 40 or have a family history of glaucoma.
  2. Wear eye protection to prevent injuries that may lead to glaucoma.
  3. Practice healthy habits, including maintaining a healthy weight and regular exercise.
