Burn Awareness Week

Burn Awareness Week: Educating to Prevent Burn Injuries

Burn Awareness Week (February 2-8) highlights the risks associated with burns and shares life-saving knowledge on treatments and prevention. Burns are among the most common injuries, affecting millions annually, yet most are preventable with proper safety practices.

Three Facts:
1. Scald injuries are a leading cause of non-fatal childhood burns worldwide, with incidents often involving hot liquids or steam.
2. Quick action, such as cooling the affected area under lukewarm water, is key in reducing burn severity.
3. The cost of treating burns in the U.S. exceeds $7 billion annually, emphasizing the need for preventative measures.

Tips for Burn Safety:
1. Always test water temperature before bathing children—keep it under 120°F.
2. Create a “no-kid” zone in the kitchen while cooking with hot liquids.
3. Educate children to handle matches, lighters, and hot objects responsibly.

Three Resources:

  1. American Burn Association – Comprehensive prevention guides and materials.
  2. Burn Prevention Network – Key burn safety tips for families.
  3. **National Safety Council ** – Broader education on accident prevention.
