Background

Organization

I am a Penn State Smeal College of Business Student

Bio and Background

My name is Tom Haug, and I am a Senior at Penn State University, double majoring in Marketing and Psychology. I grew up on Long Island as the youngest of three and could not be happier I choose to continue my education at Penn State. I love to live an active lifestyle and thoroughly enjoy going on hikes, playing golf, and working out with my friends and family. While I am not sure where exactly I will be in 5 years, I will promise I will bring these three core values: A strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and respect.

Why I am a Force for Health® Member...

I am a Force for Health Member for multiple reasons. One of the reasons I am a member is for a consulting project. More importantly, however, I am a member of Force for Health because I see the potential the company has to improve individuals’ quality of life across countless aspects of their lives.

My inspiration

I am incredibly grateful to have so many positive role models in my life; however, my grandfather is someone who I look up to more than anyone else. He was the type of person who made everyone comfortable when they were around him; he did not let anything stand in his way when he wanted to achieve a task; he would do absolutely anything for anyone; he took risks and had fun.

Location

I am currently living in State College, PA and am a member of the Penn State Community.

What would you like people to know about your community?

The Penn State community is a family. While there are 40,000 undergraduate students in State College, the Penn State Community encompasses more than just those 40,000. The PSU community also includes all students at satellite campuses across Pennsylvania, alumni, faculty, staff, friends, and family.

My Citizenship Health Factors

Some of the factors that have been challenging for me have been...

maintaining a healthy lifestyle while being a full-time student. This includes finding the time to eat the right amount of food, drinking enough water throughout the day, and eating food with a diverse source of nutrients.

It's important for me to be part of my community's health because...

eating right and exercise are two of the most important things in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, if my peers and I can develop healthy habits now, we can continue them for the rest of our lives.

Some of the strength of my community health factors are:

offering convenient times and locations to exercise at campus gyms. Additionally, Penn State offers many health-conscious items throughout their dining halls.

Some of the challenges in my community regarding certain health factors are:

finding the time to exercise, not knowing what exercises individuals should be doing, and financing a healthy diet on a college budget.

I believe I can help improve my community's health by...

creating a norm. If the Penn State Community norm is to use this app to keep track of their most important health parameters, the Force for Health will continue to grow and expand its footprint. Additionally, I believe awareness is key. Simply keeping track of what you are eating, drinking, and how far you are walking can go a long way towards improving overall health.
