Advancing the DREAM

Advancing the DREAM - What it means to me

This doesn’t necessarily directly affect me but it has affected the way I look at the healthcare system. Too many times people are mistreated in the healthcare system or not taken seriously due to their race. As I have gotten older and realized the health disparities among other people of different races, I have become more of an advocate for others to be treated fairly. I like to share with others the different resources that are available and encourage them to get the help they need.

My Action Pledge to Advance the DREAM?

I will pledge to make the many resources available to people, readily accessible to them and treat others with respect and dignity.

My inspiration

My Nana inspires me the most because she is the kindest and most gracious person I know. She loves others well and is always there for others when needed. She was a nurse for over 20 years and has loved everyday of it. She is passionate about her health and to make sure she is eating well to live a longer and happier life. She has inspired me to learn more about my health because I have seen her life improved when she made healthier decisions.

My Citizenship Health Factors

Some factors that have been challenging for me have been being bold with what I believe in and not letting the worry of what people will think get to me. I tend to be more of a people pleaser and not stand up for things especially when it comes to community health because so many people have differing opinions.

It's important for me to be part of my community's health because...

It is important for me to be a part of my community’s health because there is so much false information. I want to be able to give people accurate and factual health recommendations. There is much false advice that isn’t backed up by science that is thrown around in social media. People are led in the wrong direction and I want to help with providing accurate information.

Some of the strength of my community health factors are:

Some strengths of my community health factors are, here at NAU, they are constantly putting up different classes and posters about different health conditions and how to prevent and/or treat certain health issues. They are good at providing health programs and resources for us students to be informed and to better our health.

Some of the challenges in my community regarding certain health factors are:

Some challenges in my community are it is very overwhelming, sometimes, looking at all the resources and things that we need to be careful about being on a college campus. I often feel like there is no way I can prevent everything and get anxious about it. I think possibly setting up a way where we students can look online or a booklet to look up health issues and they provide the resources there.

I believe I can help improve my community’s health by being an advocate and also helping others find the resources they need.
