Engaging the Arts to Build COVID-19 Vaccine Confidence: Art Banners in Atlanta, Georgia

Engaging the arts community is just one of many creative strategies being used by public health to promote COVID-19 vaccine confidence and increase uptake. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partnered with the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH,) the David J. Sencer CDC Museum, Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) Georgia, and the local arts organization Living Walls (https://www.livingwallsatl.com/) to bolter local vaccine confidence through public art. Living Walls curated a collection of nine COVID-19 vaccination themed art banners that were installed in nine neighborhoods throughout Atlanta and displayed throughout the month of August 2021. Free onsite vaccine clinics were also offered at three of the installation sites to increase vaccine access for community members. This pilot was part of DPH’s broader “Say ‘Yes’ to COVID-19 vaccines” campaign (https://sayyessummer.ga.gov/) and will serve as a “case study” for other states interested in using arts and culture to empower vaccine confidence.
