Heart Month: Empowering Heart Health for a Stronger Tomorrow
February is Heart Health Awareness Month, a time to encourage everyone to take proactive steps toward heart health. Given that heart disease is the leading cause of death globally, it’s critical to understand the controllable risks and lifestyle changes that significantly lower the chances of developing this condition.
Three Facts:
1. Over 650,000 Americans die yearly from heart disease, with categories like coronary artery disease being the most prevalent.
2. Exercise (30 minutes, five times per week) has been shown to lower heart disease risk by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol.
3. Eating a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and omega-3 fatty acids promotes cardiovascular wellness.
How to Practice Prevention:
1. Know your numbers—schedule a health screening and monitor your cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose.
2. Prioritize your mental health; chronic stress can contribute to heart disease.
3. Spread awareness by participating in movement-focused events like “National Wear Red Day” on the first Friday of February.
Three Resources:
1. American Heart Association – Resources, tools, and events focused on heart health.
2. CDC: Heart Disease Prevention – Articles and best practices in managing health risks.
3. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute – Guidance for better living with a healthy heart.
