Soak Up Summer Rays with Free UT Public Health Camp

    • By Salud America

Calling all budding young public health leaders in The Alamo City!

UT Health San Antonio is giving teens in the 11th and 12th grades the chance to expand their horizons and learn what it truly means to devote yourself to the public health field by hosting a free summer camp.

The camp, which is free to attend and runs from June 17-21, 2024 in San Antonio, opens up the world of public health to students interested in careers like epidemiology, nutrition, researcher, and occupational health and safety.

For a week, teens will dive into the 10 Essential Public Health Services, which make up public health’s core functions; assessment, policy development, and assurance.

Campers will be exposed to some of these aspects through field trips around San Antonio, giving teens an inside look at the San Antonio public health system at work.

Previous field trips have included visits to Steven M. Clouse Water Recycling Center, Fort Sam Houston, and the Witte Museum.

Attendees will also endeavor to learn more about research, data collection, and dissemination and participate in interactive workshops — all while engaging with teens with similar interests.

At the end of the five-day camp, participants will complete a capstone project, which may lead to the presentation of a final group project at UT Health San Antonio’s IIMS Community Engagement Symposium.

Spaces are limited, and students’ acceptance depends on a virtual introduction meeting and application. If you’re selected, you’ll receive an invitation to enroll by May 10, 2024.

The camp is collaboratively led by UTHealth School of Public Health, UT Health San Antonio- Institute for Integration of Medicine & Science (IIMS), and the South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC).

There is no cost to attached. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Camp will commence on Monday, June 17, 2024, and run through Friday, June 21, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Neighborhood Place, 3014 Rivas St, San Antonio, TX 78228.

Find Out What’s Driving the Health of Your Community

Future public health professionals should be aware of the social issues that affect access to equitable healthcare in their communities.

Where you live can impact the type of food you eat, where you play, what schools you attend, and determine your overall quality of life and health.

As a public health professional, you’ll be tasked with addressing some of these barriers to healthcare.

Applicants can explore the issues impacting Bexar County by downloading a Salud America! Health Equity Report Card.

The Health Equity Report Card will give you a glimpse into where your community stands on issues such as environmental pollution, access to transportation, and access to healthy food in comparison to the rest of the state and the country.

Use the maps, graphs, and data in the Health Equity Report Card to identify how you can use public health to make a difference in your community and land a coveted camp spot!
