Recognizing the ‘Average Joe or Jane’ in Our Communities

By Dr. Robert Gillio, Medical Director of the Force for Health Network

As I watched Joe Biden’s speech at the Democratic National Convention, I was deeply moved by the audience’s spontaneous outpouring of gratitude, thanking him for 50 years of service. There were cheers and signs of “Thank You Joe” and “We Love Joe”.   His decision to step aside from a presidential run, believing it might hinder a higher cause, prompted me to reflect on the nature of service and recognition. While Biden’s accomplishments are notable—though not without flaws—what struck me most was the reminder that while we may not often encounter someone of such national prominence, we are constantly surrounded by people who have dedicated years, even decades, to serving others with kindness, compassion, and mentorship in their own communities.

These individuals—the “Average Joe or Jane” among us—are the true unsung heroes. They may be the nurse who cared for you during a difficult time, the teacher who believed in you when others didn’t, the clergy person who provided comfort in your darkest hour, the neighbor who always lent a helping hand, or the scout leader who guided you toward the right path. They are the people who made a difference in your life at a time when it mattered most, altering the course of your life’s trajectory in ways big and small.

These heroes may not seek recognition, but their impact is profound. Their dedication and quiet service have helped shape the lives of those around them, often without fanfare or acknowledgment.

Today, I challenge you to think about the Average Joe or Jane in your own life. Have you thanked them? Have you acknowledged their contributions in a meaningful way? Sometimes, a simple comment, a heartfelt note, or even a small event or dedication can mean the world to someone who has spent years in service to others.

Just as the nation took a moment to thank Joe Biden, let’s take a moment to say “Thank you, Joe or Jane” to those who have touched our lives in meaningful ways. Their efforts may have gone unnoticed by many, but we can give them the recognition they deserve.

I encourage you to nominate someone in your community as a Force for Health Hero. Whether they were a nurse, teacher, clergy member, neighbor, scout leader, or anyone else who made a significant impact on your life, let’s honor their dedication and kindness. You can nominate your local hero by visiting this feature in the Force for Health Network site.

Let’s give them their moment of gratitude and appreciation—they’ve earned it.

Thank you, Average Joe or Jane, for all that you do.
