My inspiration

One of the most widely recognized and inspirational figures in the Nigerian health sector is Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh.

Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh (1956–2014)

Dr. Adadevoh is widely hailed as a national hero for her decisive role in preventing a major outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Nigeria in 2014.

  • Her Heroic Action: When she correctly diagnosed the first reported case of Ebola in Nigeria (a Liberian patient named Patrick Sawyer), she took immediate and extraordinary measures to quarantine him at the First Consultants Medical Centre in Lagos, despite immense political and financial pressure to release him.

My Citizenship Health Factors

It's important for me to be part of my community's health because...

Becoming involved in the health of your community is important because the well-being of individuals is deeply connected to the well-being of the community as a whole. When people take an active role, whether through education, advocacy, volunteering, or supporting local health initiatives, they help prevent disease, promote healthy lifestyles, and ensure that resources reach those who need them most.

On a personal level, being engaged allows you to create real, tangible change, build trust, and contribute to a healthier, more equitable society. Ultimately, a healthier community benefits everyone, because healthier individuals contribute to stronger families, schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods.

Some of the strength of my community health factors are:

My community shows up for me in knowledge sharing, I am able to find who has prior knowledge or experience on an health condition

Some of the challenges in my community regarding certain health factors are:

Knowledge gap

Lack of expertise

I believe I can help improve my community's health by...

I believe I can help improve my community’s health by being an active advocate for education, access, and prevention. I want to engage directly with community members to understand their health challenges, provide support and information about healthy lifestyles, and connect them with the resources they need. By volunteering in local health programs, raising awareness about disparities, and encouraging preventive care, I hope to empower individuals to take charge of their health. Contributing in these ways allows me to make a tangible difference and help build a healthier, stronger, and more equitable community for everyone.

Does your Community have what it takes to be a best in class model for collaborative, healthy communities? Why or why not?

I believe my community has the potential to be a best-in-class model for collaborative, healthy communities. We have dedicated organizations and individuals committed to improving well-being, but gaps in access to care and persistent disparities remain challenges. I can contribute by actively engaging in community outreach, raising awareness about preventive care, and connecting people with resources. By working alongside local leaders, healthcare providers, and residents, I hope to help create a healthier, more inclusive community that serves as an example for others.

Advancing the DREAM

Advancing the DREAM - What it means to me

To me, advancing the DREAM in the spirit of Dr. King means actively working to create a system where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or background. It means advocating for policies that promote equitable access to care, supporting initiatives that educate and empower underserved communities, and challenging biases both systemic and individual that perpetuate disparities.

My Action Pledge to Advance the DREAM?

I can contribute by using my skills, voice, and resources to help bridge gaps: whether through mentorship, community outreach, volunteering, or influencing change in healthcare delivery. Every effort to ensure fairness and equity, no matter how small, is a step toward the vision Dr. King championed a society where health and opportunity are not privileges, but rights for all.
