Medical Minutes with Dr. Rob: Mouth Cancer

Fact: Over 50,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed annually in the U.S., and early detection improves survival rates significantly.

Hi, this is Dr. Rob with Dr. Rob’s Medical Minutes.
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month.

Why it’s Important
Oral cancer can develop on the tongue, lips, or throat and is often related to tobacco and alcohol use, as well as HPV. Early detection greatly increases survival rates and treatment effectiveness.

Symptoms and Findings
Warning signs include a sore in the mouth that doesn’t heal, difficulty swallowing, a persistent sore throat, or white or red patches in the mouth. Regular dental exams can catch early signs of oral cancer.

What to Do and Ask Your Doctor
If you notice unusual symptoms in your mouth, throat, or jaw, see your doctor or dentist. Regular oral cancer screenings and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol can help lower your risk and improve outcomes.
