National Kidney Month

March is National Kidney Month, sponsored by National Kidney Month , the a time to raise awareness of the importance of healthy kidneys and ways to keep them functioning well.

One in three American adults is at risk for kidney disease, and the number is rising due to the obesity epidemic and the aging of the population. Kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to stay alive.

There are simple steps everyone can take to keep their kidneys healthy:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Don’t smoke
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Control blood pressure
  • Control diabetes

If you have kidney disease, there are also steps you can take to slow its progression:

  • Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully
  • Take your medications as prescribed
  • Make healthy lifestyle changes
  • Monitor your blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • Get regular medical checkups

If you have kidney failure, you will need to undergo dialysis or have a kidney transplant. Both treatments have risks and benefits, and you should discuss them with your doctor to decide which is best for you.

Take the time to learn more about this important organ and how to keep it healthy. Your kidneys will thank you!

Join the conversation by using the resources in this promotional toolkit from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). And be sure to check out the Healthy People 2030 Chronic Kidney Disease topic for information on national objectives aimed at reducing chronic kidney disease and related complications.
