“Alright, explorers — today we’re talking about something that might make your heart race a little faster: How do we handle medical emergencies on Mars? No hospitals, no ambulances, and no ERs. If someone gets hurt or sick, they have to be their own first responder.
Today, we’ll explore the 10 essential skills every astronaut needs to stay safe and healthy on Mars.
“On Mars, there’s no 911. You’re it. That’s why every crew member needs to be trained in medical self-reliance. They must know how to perform CPR, suture a wound, manage a fracture, and even treat burns. But it doesn’t stop there. Astronauts also need to be ready for mental health challenges like stress, anxiety, and isolation. They have to manage medications, handle dental emergencies, and operate medical technology like ultrasound machines.
“These are skills you can use right here on Earth too. Whether you’re hiking in a remote location or supporting your community in emergencies, these abilities make you a more capable, confident leader.
“So, here’s the challenge: Think about which of these skills you’d want to master. Do you want to learn suturing? CPR? Maybe mastering mental wellness sounds like your path. We’re going to break down each of these essential skills so you can see how astronauts stay mission-ready — and how you can be, too.”
