8.4 Car Safety for Newborns

As a new parent, you want to do everything possible to keep your baby safe. When it comes to car safety, there are a few things you should know.
First, never place your baby in an infant car seat without first securing it in the car. The seat could come loose and injure your baby if you were in an accident.
Second, always make sure the straps on the car seat are tight and secure. A loose strap could cause your baby to be ejected from the seat in an accident.
Third, never leave your baby unattended in a car. If you have to stop for any reason, take your baby with you. Leaving a baby alone in a car can be extremely dangerous, even if the windows are cracked open.
Fourth, never let your baby ride in a car without a properly installed child safety seat. If you’re not sure how to install a seat, ask someone at the store or contact your local police department for help.
Fifth, always make sure everyone in the car is wearing a seatbelt. In an accident, a seatbelt could save your baby’s life.
Following these simple guidelines can help keep your baby safe while riding in the car. For more information on car safety, please visit the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
