7.9 Breastmilk – Storing

It is best to store breastmilk in containers that are specifically designed for this purpose. These containers will have tight-fitting lids to prevent leakage and keep the milk fresh. You can find breastmilk storage containers at most major retailers, or online.
When storing breastmilk, be sure to label the container with the date it was expressed. Breastmilk can be stored in the refrigerator for up to five days, or in the freezer for up to six months. When you are ready to use thawed breastmilk, be sure to use it within 24 hours.
Never refreeze thawed breastmilk.
If you are away from home and unable to refrigerate breastmilk, it can be stored at room temperature for up to four hours. However, it is best to use breastmilk as soon as possible after expressing it.
