Cancer Prevention Month
Cancer Prevention Month: Small Steps to Reduce Cancer Risk
February is Cancer Prevention Month, a time to focus on how small, proactive lifestyle choices can significantly reduce the risk of developing cancer. While some risk factors like genetics are out of our control, nearly 40% of cancer diagnoses and almost half of cancer-related deaths are preventable through changes in lifestyle and regular screenings. This awareness month emphasizes the importance of education, early detection, and actionable steps to lower cancer risks.
From maintaining a healthy diet to protecting yourself from harmful UV rays, Cancer Prevention Month is an opportunity to reflect on how daily habits can lead to longer, healthier lives.
Three Facts:
- Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of cancer. Quitting smoking can lower your risk of developing lung, throat, mouth, and dozens of other cancers.
- Obesity is linked to an increased risk of at least 13 types of cancer, including colorectal, breast, and pancreatic cancers. Exercise and a balanced diet play a critical role in prevention.
- Vaccinations, like the HPV vaccine, can prevent an estimated 90% of cervical and anal cancers, as well as head and neck cancers caused by HPV infections.
How You Can Help:
- Get screened—regular cancer screenings, such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and Pap smears, are critical to detecting cancer early when it is most treatable.
- Adopt healthier habits, such as eating fiber-rich foods, staying physically active, and limiting alcohol consumption to prevent lifestyle-related cancers.
- Spread awareness by sharing prevention tips with your community, participating in cancer-related fundraisers, or scheduling a seminar at work or school to educate others.
Three Resources:
- American Cancer Society – Offers cancer prevention guidelines and free tools for creating a healthier lifestyle.
- National Cancer Institute – Provides comprehensive cancer prevention research and recommendations.
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – Cancer prevention and vaccination resources for individuals and providers.
