7.13 Bathing Newborn

1. Never leave your newborn unattended while bathing.
2. Fill the tub with warm water, about four inches deep.
3. Gently lower your baby into the tub, using one hand to support the head and neck.
4. Use a washcloth to clean your baby’s face and body.
5. Be sure to clean behind the ears, in the folds of the neck, and under the arms.
6. To rinse your baby, cup your hand and pour warm water over him or her.
7. Gently lift your baby out of the tub and wrap him or her in a towel.
8. Newborns don’t need to be bathed every day.
9. When you do bathe your baby, try to time it so that he or she is not hungry or tired.
10. A bath can be a calming experience for some babies, while others find it stimulating.
11. You’ll quickly get to know what your baby likes.
12. If you’re not sure whether your baby is enjoying the bath, always err on the side of caution and take him or her out.
