Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist

Description: Registered Dietitians (RDs) and Nutritionists promote health and help patients manage disease through food and nutrition.

Duties:

  • Evaluate patients’ health needs and diet
  • Develop meal plans tailored to patients’ needs
  • Counsel patients on healthy eating habits 
  • Promote better nutrition through workshops and presentations

Training:

Registered Dietician

  • Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, clinical or public health nutrition
  • Dietetic Internship of 1,200 hours of supervised experience
  • Must pass the Registered Dietician Nutritionist exam to earn certification through Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Optional master’s degree 

Nutritionist

  • Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, clinical or public health nutrition
  • Not required to pass licensing exam, but can become an RD by passing Registered Dietician Nutritionist exam
  • Optional master’s degree

Salary: $60,370 (Median Annual Wage in U.S.)

Work Environment: Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Clinics, Cafeterias, Government

Job Outlook: Expected to increase 15% between 2016 and 2026
