Radiology Technician and MRI Technologist

Description: Radiology Technicians perform diagnostic imaging examinations on patients. MRI Technologists operate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment to produce diagnostic images. 


  • Operate, adjust, and maintain imaging equipment
  • Follow doctor’s orders to image the correct part of the patient’s body
  • Properly protect the patient and self from radiation
  • Position the patient and machinery to capture image
  • Prepare patients for procedures
  • Keep detailed patient records

  • Requires an associate’s degree
  • Complete coursework in anatomy, pathology, patient care, radiation physicians and protection, and image evaluation
  • Must be licensed and certified in each state of practice
  • Many MRI Technologists start as Radiation Technicians and specialize after several years of experience

Work Environment: Hospitals, physician’s offices, medical and diagnostic laboratories, outpatient care centers


  • Radiology Technician: $53,640 (annual mean wage in Pennsylvania)
  • MRI Technologist: $65,460 (annual mean wage in Pennsylvania)

Job Outlook: Expected to increase 13% from 2016 to 2026
