SUMMARY:Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\nThe American Academy of Ophthalmology ( https://www.aao.org/eye-health/resources/articles ) sponsors this NHO with the goal of  protecting and maintaining children’s eye health. The National Eye Institute (NEI) has lots of kid-friendly resources ( https://www.nei.nih.gov/learn-about-eye-health/nei-for-kids ) to help children learn about eye health. Find out about national objectives for improving the visual health of all Americans from the Healthy People 2020 topic area ( https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives/topic/vision ).\n\n\n\nOverview\n\n\n\nIt’s important for all children to have their vision checked at least once between ages 3 and 5. Even if children don’t show signs of eye problems, they still need their vision checked. Finding and treating eye problems early on can save a child’s sight.\n\n\n\nHealthy eyes and vision are very important to a child’s development. Growing children constantly use their eyes, both at play and in the classroom.\n\n\n\nWhat are common eye problems in children?\n\n\n\nThese common eye problems can be treated if they are found early enough:\n\n\n\n\nLazy eye (amblyopia) ( https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001014.htm )\nCrossed eyes (strabismus) ( https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001004.htm )\n\n\n\n\nOther conditions — like being nearsighted or farsighted — can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Conditions like these are called refractive errors ( https://nei.nih.gov/health/errors/errors ).\n\n\n\nIs my child at risk for vision problems?\n\n\n\nIf your family has a history of childhood vision problems, your child may be more likely to have eye problems. Talk to the doctor about eye problems in your family.\n\n\n\nEye Exams\n\n\n\nEye exams are part of regular checkups.\n\n\n\nThe doctor will check your child’s eyes during each checkup, beginning with your child’s first well-baby visit.\n\n\n\nAround age 3 or 4, the doctor will do a more complete eye exam to make sure your child’s vision is developing normally. If there are any problems, the doctor may send your child to an eye doctor.\n\n\n\nSee a Doctor\n\n\n\nFollow these steps to protect your child’s vision.\n\n\n\nTalk to your child’s doctor.\n\n\n\nAsk the doctor or nurse if there are any problems with your child’s vision.\n\n\n\nIf the doctor recommends a visit to an eye care professional:\n\n\n\n\nAsk the doctor for the name of an eye doctor who is good with kids. You can also use these tips to find an eye doctor ( https://nei.nih.gov/health/findprofessional ).\nWrite down any information about your child’s vision problem.\nPlan your child’s visit to the eye doctor ( http://www.preventblindness.org/helpful-tips-your-childs-eye-doctor-visit ). \n\n\n\n\nCost and Insurance\n\n\n\nWhat about cost?\n\n\n\nUnder the Affordable Care Act ( https://www.healthcare.gov/how-does-the-health-care-law-protect-me/ ), the health care reform law passed in 2010, health insurance plans must cover vision screening for kids.\n\n\n\n\nIf you have private insurance, your child may be able to get screened at no cost to you. Check with your insurance provider.\nMedicaid and CHIP ( https://www.insurekidsnow.gov/ ) also cover vision care for kids.\n\n\n\n\nFor information about other services for children that are covered by the Affordable Care Act, visit HealthCare.gov ( https://www.healthcare.gov/what-are-my-preventive-care-benefits/children ).\n\n\n\nIf you don’t have health insurance, check these websites for free or low-cost eye care programs for children.\n\n\n\n\nFinancial Aid for Eye Care ( https://nei.nih.gov/health/financialaid )\nSight for Students ( http://www.sightforstudents.org/ )\nInfantSEE ( http://www.infantsee.org/ )\n\n\n\n\nEye Problems\n\n\n\nLook out for problems.\n\n\n\nSchedule an eye exam for your child if you see signs of an eye problem, like if your child’s eyes:\n\n\n\n\nLook crossed\nTurn outwards\nDon’t focus together\nAre red, crusted, or swollen around the eyelids\n\n\n\n\nKnow the warning signs of vision problems in children ( http://www.healthychildren.org/English/health-issues/conditions/eyes/Pages/Warning-Signs-of-Vison-Problems-in-Children.aspx ). \n\n\n\nPrevent Eye Injuries\n\n\n\nProtect your child’s eyes.\n\n\n\n\nDon’t let your child play with toys that have sharp edges or points.\nKeep sharp or pointed objects, like knives and scissors, away from your child.\nProtect your child’s eyes from the sun with kids’ sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.\nKeep chemicals and sprays (like cleaners and bug spray) in places that kids can’t reach.\nMake sure your child wears the right eye protection for sports.\n\n\n\n\nGet more tips on preventing eye accidents ( http://www.preventblindness.org/protecting-young-children-eye-injuries-home-and-play ). \n\n\n\nVision Development\n\n\n\nHelp develop your child’s vision.\n\n\n\nIt takes skill to match up what we see with what we want to do — like when we want to bounce a ball or read a book.\n\n\n\nHere are some activities that can help your child develop vision skills:\n\n\n\n\nRead to your child and let your child see what you are reading.\nPlay with your child using a chalkboard, finger paints, or blocks.\nTake your child to the playground to climb the jungle gym and walk on the balance beam.\nPlay catch with your child.\n\nAre you playing in the 2022 Reality Health Games?\nEarn your August Calendar CHAMP BADGE Here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
